What is a YouTube outlier?
A video that performed far above its channel's normal level. We divide each video's views by the channel's median, so a 5× outlier got five times the usual views.
Why compare against the channel and not raw views?
Raw views favour big channels. Comparing a video to its own channel shows which ideas the audience pushed beyond normal, which is what you want to learn from.
